Coronavirus: the second wave
Half a year after the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic in the spring, the second wave of the pandemic has arrived. The radical increase in the number of infected is forcing more and more countries to re-impose restrictions, despite the fact that the world economy has not even recovered from the effects of the spring outbreak. With the detection of the new coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) in 484 people on Saturday, the number of infected people identified in Hungary rose to 12,309, according to the government website.
Four people died from the virus-induced COVID-19 disease last day: a 70-year-old man and a 67-year-old man, a 90-year-old man and a 92-year-old woman. The death toll from the epidemic rose to 637 with them.
Prime Minister Viktor Orbán spoke on Saturday night about the need to be prepared for a further increase in the number of infected. According to him, the effectiveness of the control can now be measured by how many lives can be saved, that is, how many of those infected die from the disease.
4,069 people have been declared cured since the beginning of the epidemic, bringing the number of active infections to 7,603, 469 more than on Friday, according to official figures. On Koronavirus.gov.hu, it was also noted that 43 percent of them and 58 percent of the deceased and 42 percent of those recovered were from Budapest.
At the hospital the day before, like Friday, 282 coronavirus patients were treated, 16 of whom were connected to a ventilator. On Friday one less was needed for mechanical ventilation.
The number of people in official home quarantine increased by 962 to 26,531.
8,826 lab tests were performed on Saturday, a total of 537,889 so far.
The number of infected people in Budapest increased by 238.
