The number of new coronavirus infections examined in a single day is gradually increasing in Italy, according to data from the Health Ministry on Friday, and is growing even faster for patients treated in hospitals. However, like several European countries, the Italian government is considering shortening the quarantine period.

Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte announced that a decision would be made on Tuesday to reduce the current quarantine period from fourteen days to ten days. Previously, France and Norway, among others, shortened the two-week quarantine, the planned reduction was justified by the economic savings of the Italian prime minister.

Most of the new ones are infected in the northern focal points.

In one day, more than 98,000 virus tests were performed and 1,616 new patients were examined compared to 1,597 previously. This is the second highest figure since the beginning of July: Since then, more patients have been registered in just one day on September 5, then more than 1,700.

Most of the new infections were re-examined in the northern focal points, 257 cases in Lombardy, 173 in Veneto and 152 in Emilia Romagna. More than 100 new patients were examined in Lazio, Tuscany and Sicily, and less than 100 were diagnosed in the other provinces.

The number of actively infected people is more than 34,000, 1,849 patients are treated in the hospital, the number of infected people in the intensive care unit increased by ten in one day, increasing to one hundred and seventy-five. Ten patients died and the number of deaths reached 35,597. Including both the healed and the dead, the number of diagnosed patients is close to 285,000.

Schools will reopen on Monday

The start of classes on Monday could be a turning point: Some 10 million students and teachers are expected to return to the closed educational institutions on March 10. According to data from the Istat statistical office, employment among people aged 15 to 34 has fallen below 40 percent in the economic recession caused by the epidemic. The employment rate for people aged 15 to 64 is less than 60 percent.

The number of people who lost their jobs due to the epidemic rose to more than 800,000 in the second quarter, mainly among those working in the hospitality, commerce and service sectors. The Italian airline Alitalia has announced that as of September 16, two of the seven daily flights between Rome and Milan will be COVID-free: passengers will undergo a rapid test before take-off. A PCR test performed seventy-two hours before the trip will also be valid.

Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle of the Philippines was found infected and quarantined at the Vatican. Cardinal Tagle, who works in the ecclesiastical state but is currently in his homeland, met with Pope Francis at the Vatican on August 29, and his first test since then was still negative, writes MTI.
