In the Czech Republic, 1,382 new confirmed coronavirus infections were detected on Thursday, more than 200 more than the highest daily number in history, according to the latest data published on the website of the Ministry of Health on Friday morning.

The number of new confirmed infections per day topped 1,000 for the first time at the beginning of the week and has been rising steadily since then. The number of confirmed active infections is also a record: 11,178. Hospitals currently treat 249 people with Covid-19 disease, 64 of whom have been classified as severe by doctors. These figures are also getting higher. The number of deaths rose to 448. Despite all this, the course of the disease remains mild in most of those infected.

Health Minister Adam Vojtech stated that the deteriorating situation is not primarily a consequence of starting school in September. Children under the age of 15 currently represent about 7 percent of those infected. Nationally, teaching is restricted to varying degrees in some 60 schools as a result of the epidemic.

As of Thursday, it is mandatory to wear mouth masks in closed rooms throughout the country. Until now, masks were only mandatory on public transport, in health facilities and in offices. Nightclubs and bars are now closed at midnight. In the experience of hygienists, the infection spreads rapidly in these places.

On Wednesday, the government decided to send the most vulnerable citizens over 60 a free respirator (FFP2) and five masks from the state reserve fund.

Epidemiologists say the situation remains the worst in Prague, where there are currently more than 100 affected people for every 100,000 inhabitants. On the map showing the status of the epidemic, Prague is already marked in pink, which shows the spread of the epidemic in the community. National Medical Director Jarmila Rázová said that on Friday, when this so-called traffic light system is revised, three districts are expected to reclassify to pink, while most of the districts will turn green instead of the white problem so far, which indicates the first level of risk. A severe epidemic is marked in red, but there are currently none.

The number of local sources of infection exceeds one hundred and a half. Prime Minister Andrej Babis said in a statement on Wednesday that a difficult autumn awaits the Czech Republic due to the epidemic.
