¿Why protesting students

The University of Theater and Cinematographic Arts (SZFE) was transferred from the state to a foundation on September 1, headed by Attila Vidnyánszky, general director of the National Theater. According to the students, the independence of the SZFE was seriously damaged by the fact that the foundation’s board of trustees already decides against the university senate on all important issues. It hurts the students more.

Are they really occupying your university now and admitting no one?

Yes, the acting students organized a demonstration last Monday and then decided to occupy the university and symbolically, with red and white ribbons, settle in the university building on Vas Street, where no one but the citizens of the university will be admitted until your demands are met. .

But what do they want at all?

Ultimately, the resignation of Vidnyánszky’s board of trustees and the reestablishment of the powers withdrawn from the Senate.

What happens to Vidnyánszky?

Attila Vidnyánszky is the director general of the National Theater, who has been quite critical of the university, the artists who teach there, and the students. But they really don’t have a problem with him as a person. What they don’t like is that not a single person who had previously had anything to do with the university was on the foundation’s board, the five-member board of directors. Although the management of the institution appointed several people to the board of directors, the government ultimately did not appoint any of them.

Who is on the board of directors?

In addition to Attila Vidnyánszky, Zoltán Rátóti, actor and director, Tamás Lajos, director of photography and producer, György Bacsa, strategic general director of Mol, and Oszkár Világi, president and CEO of Slovnaft are also members.

And what are these powers that make you so naughty?

Previously, the university management decided how to manage its state support, who should be the teachers of the class, who could teach in the performing arts. All of these powers have been transferred to the five-member Board of Trustees.

What does the board of directors want?

According to Attila Vidnyánszky, so far only one worldview has been represented in the university, they want to achieve a national and Christian worldview both in teaching staff and in education.

And is this really so?

It is difficult to judge this because the whole issue is quite politicized. It is a matter of taste. University professors and students say apolitical ideologies have been taught so far in the university.

Many teachers have resigned, who will teach here now?

In fact, several members of the faculty have resigned from the university because they do not agree that this is how the institution will be transformed. Among others, Gábor Máté, Gábor Zsámbéki and Gábor Székely, as well as Tamás Ascher will appear. However, there are those who do not leave. It is not yet known exactly who will stay or who will come to teach. It is quite plastic.

Can college students win?

In recent years, it has been rare for the government to back down. If you really do face serious resistance, there is the possibility of a compromise. Many people now support the protesters: several Hungarian and cross-border universities have expressed their solidarity with the SZFE, but several famous foreign actors have also expressed their support. These are the #freeSZFE selfies on Facebook.

How long can they keep the blockade?

Many bring food, drink, toiletries, Covid protection equipment to the protesters. Not to mention, they’re not constantly in college either. They swap, they alternate after a while. This can take a long time.
