Neither Vidnyánszky nor the leadership of the SZFE attended the conciliation of the Conference of Rectors

New Wednesday of New Times by Peter Uj.

I’m interested

The Hungarian Rectors’ Conference represents the entire Hungarian higher education system and as such is fully competent when the senate of a Hungarian university declares that “all essential elements of its autonomy will be abolished”.

When the CEU was drafted, the Rectors’ Conference (MRK) and the National Conference of Student Municipalities (HÖOK) had issued a cautious resolution, none on the case of the University of Theater and Motion Picture Arts. Instead, a consultation was initiated between the university leaders and the board headed by Attila Vidnyánszky, in a very specific way.

Last week, László Borhy, President of MRK, and László Murai, President of HÖOK, invited László Upor, who will also serve as rector during his resignation. Upor accepted it. On the other hand, he only learned from MRK’s announcement that he had also participated that Vidnyánszky would be present at the meeting. This put Uport in a difficult position, as it became known that he had already consulted with Vidnyánszky last week, which both sides said were unsuccessful, and the students categorically refused to negotiate with what they considered an illegitimate patronage.

In any case, Upor rushed to issue a statement in which he stated that “based on what has been said so far, I will not give or take advantage of negotiating with the Vidnyánszky family.” However, he accepted the invitation because “I still believe that it is a natural task of the Hungarian Rectors Conference to take a position on the autonomy of Hungarian universities and therefore also on the issue of SzFE”.

He also recalled that two months ago in the MRK plenary session, he explained to the entire faculty that “university autonomy is seriously threatened by the change in model; the urgent and forced march makes prudent work impossible; and the attacks that “justify” the transition are a grave violation of the 155-year tradition of our university and the current community. “Upor added that his speech remained completely unusual.

After such antecedents, this particular meeting was finally held this Wednesday, at the site of which, in ELTE, several teams of cameramen waited for them in vain, despite their previous signal.

Vidnyánszky and Upor did not come, nor was the university represented.

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, which attracted all the important rights of the Senate, he spoke with lawyer and actor Zoltán Rátóti, with whom the leaders of MRK and HÖOK discussed the situation. When they finished, President HÖOK László Murai held a press conference, but almost no details were revealed.

In his personal position, he said that the root of the problem was that the interpretation of the autonomy of both parties was completely different and that although the change of model was a well-planned and well-thought-out process in the other institutions, the SZFE was forced to react to university policies. According to Murai, university autonomy can work well if students’ opinions are channeled into decision-making, and he has expressed the opinion that it would reassure SZFE students if they manage to reach compromises with the board of directors on these issues.

Number 444 asked if it emerged in the conciliation that the members proposed by the university could also be admitted to the board of trustees, to which the president of HÖOK replied that, according to his “modest intuition”, this board was not open at this time. Their joint proposal with MRK was that the board of trustees could make some kind of gesture, but “as if it had settled” in the Rátóti police station.

We also did not learn more details from the HÖOK evening announcement, and the MRK also issued only a series of reactions. This suggests that they would like to enter into further negotiations with the university’s professors and students, and with the board of trustees, and thus mediate among themselves, “hoping that knowing the details of the views of the parties can help to resolve the situation in a manner reassuring. “

According to President HÖOK, it is a “catchy question” why Vidnyánszky did not come, who officially justified his absence by not understanding. We also asked SZFE in vain why Upor did not show up. However, according to our information, on Friday there will be a meeting of the governing board of the presidents, which you plan to attend.

You read, you saw what the world was like here. The epidemic is running out of publicity, the government is running out of newspapers. In this situation, our future has become more uncertain than at any other time in the last 7 years. If we want to continue, we must open a new chapter in the history of 444.
