Seasonal food prices rose 17.1 percent due to a 46.0 percent increase in fruit prices, while vegetable prices fell 6.6 percent and potatoes 8 , 0 percent.
The price of sugar rose 13.4% in one year, that of eggs 10.2% and that of milk 8.9%. Pork was 9.8 percent higher than in August last year, while poultry was just 2.3 percent.
Tobacco prices were up 10.3 percent from 9.7 percent the previous month. The price of alcoholic beverages rose 3.3 percent.
Vehicle fuel prices fell 4.7 percent, up from 4.2 percent the previous month. Durable consumer goods increased 2.6 percent. Within this, new cars cost 12.3 percent more, used cars 5.1 percent cheaper, and computers and phones cost 4.0 percent less. Jewelry prices rose 24.4 percent.
The price of services increased by 3.5 percent, including remuneration for domestic services, repairs, cleaning and laundry by 8.5 percent. Postal services are 10.2 percent more expensive and use of telephones and the Internet 3.5 percent more expensive. Long-distance travel rates fell 6.6 percent, while the cost of domestic vacations increased 5.6 percent.
Compared to July, food prices fell 0.3 percent, mainly as a result of a 4.4 percent drop in seasonal food prices (potatoes, fresh vegetables, fresh domestic and southern fruit combined ). Excluding this, food costs on average 0.2 percent more. Vehicle fuel prices fell 0.8 percent. Services increased 0.4 percent, partly as a result of a 2.2 percent monthly increase in prices for vacation services.
The increase is less, according to the statistical office, than last year’s 3.3 percent price increase.
Annual core inflation increased from 4.5 percent in July to 4.7 percent. The inflation of the basket of retired consumers remained at 4.3 percent, the same as in the previous month – in the report of the Central Statistical Office.
