At the age of 59, David Graeber, one of the most influential left-wing anthropologists and thinkers in decades, has died. The death of his wife, Nika Dubrovsky posted on Twitter.

The American-born Graeber began teaching at Yale and later Goldsmith’s College in London, and since 2013 has been a professor at the London School of Economics. As an anthropologist, one of his fields of research was the theory of value, and his related work resulted in his book Debt: The First 5000 Years, which describes the history of the relationship between debt and societies, thanks to which he became in a world renowned author.

However, his highest reputation came to him in a 2013 online essay in which he wrote that a significant portion of today’s job types have no meaning and that most people spend their days doing completely unnecessary jobs. . The shitty jobs essay had a great run online, which Graeber later expanded into a full book that was published in 2018. We also featured the main statements of his writing in an article last year, and the book is slated to be released. post soon in Hungarian.

Throughout his research career, Graeber has remained committed to the left anarchist movements, Occupy Wall Street, at all times! He was an important player, and even, according to some memories, he can be linked with the motto ‘We are the 99%’, which later had a great career.

Aside from the forthcoming book, only one article by Graeber has been published in Hungarian so far to my knowledge, in 2012 Turns magazine published his article Debt, violence and impersonal markets, which can be read here.
