The Czech Republic has the highest number of cases since the outbreak began. The Hungarian government will allow the entry of Czech tourists despite the border closure, but only if they have a negative test.

Coronavirus: the second wave

Half a year after the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic in the spring, the second wave of the pandemic has arrived. The radical increase in the number of infected is forcing more and more countries to re-impose restrictions, despite the fact that the world economy has not even recovered from the effects of the spring outbreak. According to the posters, the second wave also reached Hungary. Follow our news!

In the Czech Republic, 503 new confirmed coronavirus infections were detected on Tuesday, the highest number since the outbreak began in the spring, according to data published on the website of the Czech Ministry of Health. Since March 1, when the first infection was detected, more than 25,000 people have been infected with Covid-19 in 10 and a half million countries.

The highest daily number of cases to date, based on the reviewed data, 502 new confirmed patients, was recorded on August 21. The number of daily cases has increased steadily over the past two weeks.

Wednesday’s record was preceded by two days before the Hungarian government’s decision that tourists can come from the Czech Republic, along with the other Visegrad countries, despite the total closure of the border. According to Péter Szijjártó’s announcement, Czech citizens who have already booked their accommodation in Hungary before September can enter the country with a single negative test no longer than 5 days. This was requested by the Czech Prime Minister, Andrej Babiš, from Viktor Orbán.

Similarly, Hungarians can travel once they have paid for their trip, and conversely, a single negative test is enough to avoid quarantine. The Foreign and Commonwealth Ministry previously said security guarantees had been obtained during the negotiation of the new regulation.

In the Czech Republic, the use of a mask is mandatory from Tuesday in health and social institutions, offices, public transport and polling stations.

However, for a positive Covid-19 test, the mandatory quarantine has been reduced from two weeks to 10 days.

Deputy Prime Minister Karel Havlícek and more than a dozen members of parliament are also in quarantine. According to Adam Vojtech, head of the health ministry

At present, the authorities do not plan other national precautions, such as restrictions on the opening hours of shops or restaurants.

The minister goes on to say that there is no cause for concern at the national level because the authorities are controlling the spread of the infection.

About 75 percent of patients in the Czech Republic have already recovered. So far, 425 people have died as a result of the infection. The current number of patients is 6,576, 166 who need hospital treatment, 32 of which have been classified as serious by doctors. These numbers have also increased moderately in recent weeks.

With the opening of schools in September, the situation can be expected to deteriorate further. However, data on this are not yet available. According to Education Minister Robert Plaga, teaching has not started in some two dozen schools due to coronavirus problems.

Currently, there are more than one hundred local sources of infection in the country where more precautions are taken. The infection has spread more recently in Prague, where there are currently 46 patients per 100,000 inhabitants. Last week, that number was 39.

The former editorial office of index.hu has essentially ceased to exist, the country has lost its most read online interface. This is one of the most serious blows to the independent Hungarian press and freedom of information to date. The number of independent power editorial boards is steadily decreasing, and those that still exist are trying to stay afloat in a growing headwind.
