The number of new coronavirus infections in Hungary has risen steadily in recent weeks, and it appears that the virus is now spreading more among young people, the national medical director told MTI on Wednesday.

Müller Cecília He added: The data needs to be analyzed, but while the spring epidemic affected older people with chronic diseases, this has changed significantly today. The average age of newly infected people is around 30 years. Therefore, the responsibility of young people is increasing in these weeks, the possibility of the virus spreading in the community is greater in this age group, he emphasized.

As he said, young people may not realize that they can get sick, they feel less at risk of infection because they have little or no symptoms of the disease, but they can transmit the virus. Therefore, Cecília Müller asked young people to act responsibly.

He highlighted the need to continue complying with epidemiological regulations and recommendations: distance, use of a mask in public transport and in confined spaces, as well as regular hand washing, hand disinfection, disinfection of common surfaces of frequent use.
According to him, adhering to these can prevent national measures that “made our lives very difficult in the spring” from having to be reintroduced.

According to official data, 365 Hungarian citizens were recently diagnosed with the infection on Wednesday, the number of cases was not high during the epidemic. Three elderly people died, the number of actively infected people is 2,100. 45 percent of the actively infected people, 60 percent of the dead and 42 percent of the recovered were in Budapest. The hospital cares for 98 coronavirus patients, seven of whom are hooked up to ventilators.
