The network of bicycle lanes in Budapest will be transformed. On Monday, the mayor of Budapest, Gergely Karácsony, announced at a press conference that on September 1, the current system, a bicycle and a car lane will receive traffic in Nagykörút, but then a transformation will come, which may be good for motorists, cyclists and residents. . According to this, the boulevards of Grand Boulevard will not be completely eliminated. From Blaha Lujza Square to Petőfi Bridge, cars will be able to circulate twice in two lanes to Dohány Street, bike lanes will be formed in the previous parking lane. After that there will be 2×1 lanes for motorists because the additional bike lane cannot be built.

Gergely Christmas promised to make it easier to drive cars on Grand Boulevard. Islands will be built on the sidewalks to make the lamp program more favorable; now many times the lights of the zebras catch the traffic. In front of the junctions, the order of the traffic changes so that there is no congestion. In addition to the above, the traffic in Üllői út also changes, the bike lane remains in the other places.

They want to make all of these changes during September, most of them early this month. Construction will begin this week.

After the press conference, Balázs Fürjes, Secretary of State of the Prime Minister’s Office for Budapest and the agglomeration, also spoke out, attacking the bicycle lane network established in the spring of last week, shouting “car chase”. .

In a statement sent to the Index, the Hungarian Cycling Club welcomed the decision to maintain bike lanes in Nagykörút, Bartók Béla út, Villányi and Tétényi út, but added that it does so despite the fact that Grand Boulevard cannot find no solution for the comprehensive renovation of the boulevard.
