The second stage of the Tour de Hongrie was won by Pole Jakub Mareczko at the end of a hair field in which the yellow jersey of the cycling race, Jon Aberasturi, could not participate due to a fall. After Saturday’s mountain stage, the Tour de Hongrie field visited the Great Plain, 158 kilometers between Debrecen and Hajdúszoboszló, hoping that the cyclists, according to the track plan, the sprinters could prepare for victory. The flat track promised an easy stage, but the strong winds and 36 degree heat were a challenge for everyone.
A few kilometers after the departure in Debrecen, a group of six fugitives had already formed, including the Hungarian team András Szatmáry, but also Arturo Gravalos (Kometa-Xstra), Diether Sweeck (Alpecin-Fenix), Gilles De Wilde (Vlaanderen -Baloise), Simone Sano (Team Novák) and Ziga Horvat (Adria-Mobil) entered.
The biggest advantage of the break was 5 minutes 27 seconds, but of course the field could not let them get home. Twenty miles from the finish, all but Gravalos melted on the flea, the Spaniard walked for another ten miles with a twenty-two-second lead off the field, but was eventually caught as well.
The Runaways didn’t have a completely useless experiment because they also had two undercoats on stage, where the bonus seconds were also assigned to the first three. From this, Szatmáry was the one who benefited the most, accumulating a total of five seconds, becoming first his first undercoat and second his second. Szatmáry collected second for the title of best Hungarian competitor and took the lead in the general classification. He even had a time difference in the first results list for the first stage, but the jury reviewed the runner-up due to a crash and finally awarded the first sixty riders at the same time. Among them were Dina Márton (Kometa-Xstra), Valter Attila (CCC Team), Kusztor Péter (Team Novo Nordisk) and Szatmáry.
For the last 10 kilometers, the biggest teams were at the top of the pile, with Barnabas Peák taking the pace at Mitchelton-Scott, but Jumbo-Visma also sent his men forward, but Caja Rural, who defended the yellow jersey , it was not very visible. For the last 3 kilometers, Trek-Segafredo took control, and then the CCC also caught up with its extension.
At the last corner, the front of the field turned smoothly, but around the middle of the rock, one of the riders got caught in the lacing element and several fell, including the Jon Aberasturi yellow jersey.
CCC rider Jakub Mareczko settled his hair quite smoothly, with his sprint started from afar alongside his practically drawn opponents. Matteo Moschetti (Trek-Segafredo) was second and Luva Pacioni (Androni-Giocattoli) was third.
The crash took place less than 3 kilometers from the finish, so the cyclists who were involved in it got the same time as the winner Mareczko. On Saturday Polish was more than 13 minutes behind, as was Moschetti, and Pacioni finished seven minutes later than the winner, so they could not get the yellow jersey. As Aberasturi’s direct rivals, riding in pain, did not get a bonus in the second leg, the Caja Rural rider kept the yellow jersey along with the crash.
