Judit Varga still hopes that Brussels will give the Hungarian government the opportunity to speak in the European Parliament (EP) in the plenary debate on Hungary.

In his statement, he explained whether it was still questionable whether he could contribute to the debate on the Hungarian coronavirus law, despite the fact that all the principles of the rule of law, fair procedure and democracy would require it. These are basic values that are called “hypocritical and constantly” in Hungary, he added.
The head of the ministry called it morally reprehensible that European left-wing factions dealt with the Hungarian rule of law again when thousands of people died and millions lost their jobs in Europe due to the epidemic.
“I am not convinced that this is not the initiative of Hungarian left-wing MEPs, and they are not the ones holding the pen,” he said.
Judit Varga asked, if this debate was already taking place, why was it not the EP’s first reflection to invite the Hungarian government.
“The track will be very tilted in the direction of hearing the usual accusations against the country again,” he said. He emphasized that he felt compelled to adopt the opposite opinion at any cost, so that those who followed the debate could get closer to reality.
The Minister of Justice also noted that there is no written rule on who represents governments in plenary debates. There have been several occasions for a secretary of state to represent a country in the article of the week, he said, adding that, in addition, there are extraordinary moments, with heads of state and government “who do not go to Brussels, but defend defense in your own country. “He stressed that the only democratic response from Brussels is to allow their presence, and a movement to the contrary will have diplomatic consequences.
Judit Varga recalled that the European Commission had also confirmed that the Hungarian coronavirus law was in line with European standards.
Hungarians’ health and economy are protected by the government.
He stressed that the Hungarian government is taking emergency measures, which serve to protect people’s lives and health, and seeks to minimize economic damage.
On Tuesday Prime Minister Viktor Orbán responded in a letter to EP President David Maria Sassoli, who invited the Prime Minister to the plenary debate on Hungary on Thursday. The head of government explained that all his strength and energy are currently dedicated to fighting the epidemic, so that the Minister of Justice and Affairs of the European Union, Judit Varga, on behalf of the Hungarian government, can participate in the debate. The Prime Minister also drew the attention of the President of the EP to the presence of a Secretary of State to represent the Presidency of the European Council.
