Viktor Orbán informed the President of the European Parliament in a letter that he would not discuss the empowerment law and the Hungarian rule of law in Brussels, but would send a minister on behalf of the government.

On Tuesday, the President of the European Parliament, David Sassoli, invited Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán to Thursday’s debate on the Hungarian Authorization Law and the situation of the Hungarian rule of law.

Orbán has now replied to Sassol, in which he wrote that all his strength and energy are currently linked to the fight against the epidemic, so that Judit Varga, Minister of Justice and Affairs of the European Union, can participate in the debate in name of the Hungarian government.

“In view of the presence of a Secretary of State on behalf of the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, I respectfully request that Judit Varga be given the opportunity to speak in the debate.” All of this was posted on Facebook by another Varga:

The situation is quite spicy, because Orbán was invited mainly due to the statement of the Minister of Justice Judit Varga. Varga told MTI a few days ago that the EP wants to try Hungary amid a coronavirus epidemic, ignoring the Hungarian government.

Varga complained that “the Baliberal majority in the European Parliament wants to pass a judgment on Hungary in such a way that, without taking into account the most basic principle of a fair trial, it does not allow the position of the Hungarian government to be presented in the debate in Brussels”.

Varga also wanted to speak at the meeting, either in person or online, but this was rejected by Socialist EP President David Sassoli, the minister told MTI at the time.

It is questionable whether, if the EP President accepts the change, Varga can speak at the meeting, because MEPs, members of the European Commission or members of the EU Presidency can speak in plenary according to the rules, but respectfully to the Heads of State and Government. it also gives you the option if you are told you want to comment.

However, in the case of a minister or secretary of state, participation is at the discretion of the President of the EP.
