The government of the Republic of South Africa announced on Friday that it would release some 19,000 prisoners convicted of a misdemeanor on probation to prevent outbreaks of coronary virus in prisons.

According to a statement by the South African presidential office, President Cyril Ramaphosa made this decision in response to a UN call on member states to reduce the number of prisons to the point where community distancing and segregation can be used to combat the epidemic.

The measure affects nearly 19,000 prisoners, which is approximately one-eighth of South Africa’s prison population of approximately 155,000. The decision does not apply to persons convicted of serious crimes, including sexual offenses, murder, attempted murder, gender violence, or child abuse.

The Republic of South Africa is the African country most affected by the coronavirus epidemic, with 8,232 cases of coronavirus infection and 161 deaths resulting from the infection so far. To prevent massive diseases, the country, with a population of nearly 58 million, took strict measures for isolation at the start of the outbreak and began extensive testing.
