Népszava’s Tuesday number writes that the number of higher education applicants has decreased from last year to this year, which has not been seen in a long time.

According to news reviewed by MTI, this year around 91,400 students have applied to study at a higher education institution. This is approximately 20,000 less than the 2019 figure.

Very few have been recruited in 19 years. An example of a decrease of the same magnitude as the current one was the last one seven years ago: then, in 2013, 15,000 fewer people entered (95,000) than the previous year.

The largest higher education institutions have been least affected by Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE): compared to 24.7 thousand last year, 24.1 thousand are trying to enter one of the university’s faculties this year.

Approximately 1,000 students applied to the Budapest University of Technology, 1,500 to the Budapest University of Economics, 1,600 to the University of Pécs, 1,800 to the University of Szeged and 3,000 fewer students to the University of Debrecen compared to 2019. It represents a drop between 20 percent. According to Népszava, the rate is even worse in smaller universities.
