There are already two million people living with the coronavirus in the world, more than one hundred thousand have lost their lives to the disease and the economic impact is invaluable. We try to inform our readers about everything, stay tuned, read our series of articles.

According to a representative sample, involving tens of thousands of people, four Hungarian medical educators will begin a comprehensive assessment of coronavirus, Semmelweis (SE) University said on Tuesday. The purpose of the study is to ensure that the restart of the economy and the gradual dismantling of restrictions can take place in the next, second phase of controlling the epidemic with due justification.

To do this, it is necessary to find out where and how many people have been infected or how many have already been infected with a coronavirus.

The test will be attended by 17,778 people from all over the country, over 14 years old, selected based on invitations from statisticians from the Central Statistical Office. They will be notified by letter and, where appropriate, by phone. Screening is performed using the PCR test, the most reliable method known to date to detect the presence of the virus, in which the patient’s respiratory (pharyngeal and nasal) secretions are sampled with a swab. The procedure does not hurt, as promised in the communication, it is simply inconvenient. They also take blood from which they can detect the body’s immune response to the virus. Participants must also complete a short questionnaire and eventually everyone will be notified of their own results.

Previously, an expert from the National Center for Public Health spoke about the decrease in the epidemic due to comprehensive restrictions so far. The next step should be to restart the economy while easing the restrictions, accompanied by extensive testing. The Hungarian Academy of Sciences made a similar recommendation. László Palkovics also spoke in advance about the reliefs: the economy will recover quickly, but the number of infected people is expected to increase.

National test results are expected to be released in mid-May. Researchers and doctors from Hungarian universities repeat the full exam at least twice more, at least one month apart.

The series of studies is led by SE with the support of the Ministry of Innovation and Technology, the other three participants are the University of Debrecen, the University of Szeged and the University of Pécs.
