German-American friendship is a common treasure that needs to be further improved, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said in a press release on the occasion of the US presidential election in Berlin on Monday.
He stressed that by decision of the electorate, the next president of the United States will be Joe Biden, who will begin his work with decades of experience in domestic and foreign policy and knows Germany and Europe well. He added his heartfelt congratulations to both the President-elect and Kamala Harris, who is “the first woman in office and the daughter of immigrants to be an inspiration to many people and an example of the opportunities America has offered.”
He stressed that the Germans had experienced in their own skin the importance of the United States in freedom and democracy. They also directly experienced the importance of German-American friendship and transatlantic partnership for Germany, Europe, and the world.
He noted that just thirty-one years ago, the fall of the Berlin Wall began on November 9, 1989 and just a few weeks ago, on October 3, the 30th anniversary of the reunification of Germany was celebrated. Reunification “could not have taken place without the confidence of the Americans,” the German chancellor stressed.
This trust and this friendship are necessary for many years. The two countries are also linked by common values, human dignity, democracy, the rule of law, and common interests.
“The United States and Germany, as members of the European Union, must stand together so that we can overcome the great challenges of our time,” Angela Merkel said.
He stressed that the United States is Germany’s “most important ally”, which nevertheless rightly expects Germany and other European partners to do more for its security and uphold its beliefs.
“We Europeans have already embarked on this journey,” said Angela Merkel.
He congratulated Joe Biden, among others, on Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who emphasized that the president-elect represents an America that “values the value of alliances, friends, trust and confidence.”
Joe Biden has great hope for his presidency, far beyond the borders of the United States, “hope for new cooperation, calm, insightful thinking and constant work to solve the problems of a troubled world,” said the German federal president.
He stressed that Germany is willing to work with the future president “for a better, more peaceful and just world.”
