Besides Cat Catcher, it was perhaps the most popular Hungarian cartoon, made in three seasons with different moods, and many fondly remember the well-known characters, Paula, who is a lot of squeaks, Géza, the petty bourgeois urinal, a dingy single neighbor, Maris, and of course Blök, the mob. We have collected some unknown facts about Hungarian cartoons screened in various countries.
1. Pannónia Filmstúdió also received a fixed mandate from Hungarian Television, but there was also French money in the series. The first piece of the deal was the Mézga family’s first series in 1968-1970, but funding was only enough to complete the first four parts. It was then that Georges De La Grandiére, who reworked La Fontaine’s tales, came on the scene, visited Pest, looked at the finished material, and liked the imaginative multi-genre family series so much that he assured the manufacturer of the French distribution and then the replaced with an advance.
2. A large-scale development process began in 1967-68 – recalled cameraman Zoltán Bacsó. It was then that they started working on the first season of the Gum series: the series was very good to get a manual practice that was fundamental later on. “In Mézga, for example, 120 meters were lowered from the machine in one day, we worked three shifts,” he recalled.
3. Perhaps the best part of the first series is when the characters go back in time to the past and find themselves in a medieval feudal world. This was also one of director József Nepp’s favorites, even before the screening. “The time extender is perhaps the one that worked the best. It is about the family that goes on a trip, finds old money in the ruins of a castle, sells coins for good money to a neighbor. Encouraged by the store, they ask Öcsi for a time extension machine and return to XIII. century. As usual, this is a big problem, ”he said.
4. In the first two series, Attila Némethy voiced Aladár, Luke was sometimes ridiculed at school. “I look like Aladár because I am the family coach. I will do the fuse, it is true that I will knock him out. Otherwise I don’t think I look like the Gum Boy: Aladár was calm, and that really cannot be said of me. Still, I have to point out that for a while at school, everyone calls me Lük or, at best, Aladár. I can handle it. Only then should Aladár celebrate his birthday with me! “He joked in 1970.
5. The real Hufnágel Pisti was known as the son of József Nepp. “First we invent the family, the figures, who should be what. The teenager, the eternally grumpy neighbor, the pipo husband, are figures we all know. I went to kindergarten with Hufnágel Pisti. We haven’t seen each other since, but after the movie, I received letters from various Hufnágels, ”the director said in 1988.
6. The second series, in which Aladár was the protagonist, was carried out with a different working method, which József Nepp spoke about. “We started in reverse order for the second series. Previously, the Mézgá family history was made in such a way that József Romhányi wrote the stories, the text of the dialogues and I translated them into a drawing. Now the drawing script is done first and the writer and composer give it voice and music. Of course, this does not mean that the meaning of the word in the film decreases, on the contrary, this time, for example, Blöki also speaks – in the voice of Otto Szabó. We also tried to make a good choice for the other synchronous tones. We adapted Aladár Lüke to Attila Némethy, who was a teenager in the meantime, and one of the princesses in the role speaks with the voice of Zsuzsa Pálos. Taking advantage of gender means that the horse also speaks. The voice of the paripa will be Alfonzo … We want the story of each film to be more actionable, exciting and, last but not least, really joyful ”.
7. József Nepp and József Romhányi wrote the plot of the second season for a year. “An episode consists of approximately eight to ten thousand drawings. It is meticulous, long and very tedious to do this, I think it does not need to be tried. And then comes the filming. We already composed this series specifically for TV, and this requires a more careful elaboration of the details. So let me also mention my colleagues, who will play an important role in seeing the new adventures of Mézgá welcomed by viewers. Many new characters will be introduced in the new series, and its designers are Marcell Jankovics, Béla Ternovszky, József Gémes, Katalin Bánki and Magda Vásárhelyi. Representatives of the foreign world, unknown, participants in the events, come out of their hands ”.
8. The third series was more elaborate in drawing. The previous parts were nice on their own, they had a beginning, an end, but on vacation, the Gum family told a long story in pieces. “The episodes of the two previous series were separate stories. On this occasion, we tell a sequential story of the family’s great and tumultuous journey. Perhaps viewers still remember the name Hufnágel Pisti. She didn’t become a cartoon heroine, but Paula used to mention why she didn’t marry Géza Mézga. Now Hufnágel Pisti from Australia reports in a letter inviting the Mézga family. They also left, but the complications begin as soon as they arrive: not only are they looking for Paula’s former suitor, but the police, ”Nepp said in 1977. The author of the story at that time was József Romhányi, the director of the 26-minute episodes. it was József Nepp and Béla Ternovszky. About 7,000 drawings were made for each episode.
