In BillboardIn a new interview with Carey, we were able to collect a few roasted chestnuts before Friday’s holiday special, as well as look back at his big achievement last Christmas, when the singer / songwriter reached his 19th number 1 on the Billboard Hot. 100 “” All I do is you for Christmas. Check out the interview below, conducted by Carrie L., wearing a sequin silver robe surrounded by a silver Christmas tree covered with snow in a scene created for the Ice Queen below.

Maria, you are seeing a special festive feeling!

If I don’t look festive, Katie, I don’t know who has the festive feel. [Laughs]

From what we know about you Magical Christmas special Yet, you’re helping your “great friend” Santa solve the holiday cheer crisis. Where did this idea come from?

Of course we have to get involved with Santa and make sure that everything he is trying to do, the merry Christmas, will be brought to everyone. So the fact that we have the ambiguity of the current place in the world every year we can not fail all the extra fun things – which I know I Do it every year. We talked to Apple Paul and we were like, look, let’s make sure Santa is good and we’ll figure it out! And that magical Christmas will be special, and I’m here for it.

Apart from Santa, some other great friends are also coming with you, including Ariana Grande and Jennifer Hudson “Oh Santa!” How did you recreate the song for the three of you?

I wrote “Oh Santa!” For my album Merry Christmas II to you, Which was a follow-up to my first Christmas album – we have many [Laughs] – And so I think it was all about the actual event, of course, “Oh Santa!” With Jennifer and Ari, but it was like that, how can I see this as a producer? How do I see these vocals with different textures, what is it? Because originally, I was blending in with myself, which is one of my favorite things, but it was cool to be able to work with different sounding textures and play with it and re-imagine it. So it has happened. And visually, in particular, it really feels like a girl group moment. I think we all had a good time with him. That was the enjoyable part about it.

There are many other great moments in particular, such as Tiffany’s Hudish describing, “Night before Nights.” Come on, can it really be better than that? She’s one of the funniest people I’ve ever met. … And Billy Eichner, hilarious. Do you know Billy?

Of course! Your On Billy Street Last Christmas with him was incredible, so I’m glad you’re reconnecting.

me too! We had a lot of fun. It was like light during this time. It takes a lot of time to show off and be like him, as much as we love all of this, “I want to celebrate!” It is necessary. And I love that his arrogance and confusion, his character he has created for this, is in stark contrast to mine. I really love what he likes.

Misty Copeland brings her specialty to this specialty and “Sugar Plum Fairy” – a lot more than what I re-earned, and now we’ve re-earned it, and it’s long and it’s about to play an instrument with my voice. , So I really enjoy.

A lot of people showed up and really, really worked hard. [Carey’s twins] Rock and Row are in particular, Michael-Michelle Harris, for whom we live Mixed-ish, Which I wrote [theme] Song for that. She is friends with Rock and Roe, so I love her character [in the special]. We are taking Christmas together and she enjoys Christmas even during the obscurity of the year and in particular, her family does not have trees this year. It’s a whole different kind of moment for her as the baby goes through this. And in honor of my inner child I wrote this new song “Little Marias theme” … and then “Little Mimi’s theme”, so that it stimulates the song [soundtrack]. I wrote it literally with my dear friend Daniel in the car on the way home from the shooting of the film. Because… when [Harris’ character] Eventually her zoo gets back, she puts the ornament on the tree and it’s a golden butterfly ornament, and it just seemed weird to me, it didn’t feel balanced. So we’ve written this thing and we’ve put it together in a car ride – which is a first for me. I have to do that. But I really love that she inspired me.

Anyone I miss is just because we want you to look special and see some Easter eggs.

Well Jermaine Dupree and Snoop

Yes!

Can you specifically talk about what they are doing or what songs they are doing?

So that was a last minute thing. Me and Germain shouted “Oh Santa!” With. We also reinterpreted “Here comes Santa Claus” – slash – “Right down Santa Claus Lane” – Clash – “Hostop Celebration” – it’s a long title. [Laughs], Because sometimes I would put together different songs and make it one thing. When we wrote that song, there was a section [she sings] “Assemble the round.” I was just saying, “Hmm, this might be something great to re-explain.” And I J.D. Talked to, and there was someone who suggested Snoop, so I said, “Let me just call Jermaine,” because instead of going through all that bureaucracy, she and I have such a close relationship, and Snoop was there the other day. He did his part. That’s my new thing. I live for it. I’m waiting to hear back [Snoop] I’m about a very specific Christmas idea for her, and I’m giving it up, because I haven’t even talked to her about it. But he showed up – I wouldn’t say what I was wearing, but he instilled in me the idea that I was ready to learn about the world. That’s a big thing. I tell you, Katie! I wish someone had suggested this to me, but I can’t. It is more appropriate to do this.

Well, we’ll wait for more on that! You mentioned your twins being special. Should we hear Rock and Ron sing?

“All I want.” No. At the end they sing a little. When I was 6 years old with them we recorded a song with them that we didn’t perform. They were like, “Why didn’t we leave it?” It was so beautiful, because it was when Rocky had an accent – no accents well, but really some letters haven’t been accented yet – and they’re both singing on it. So one of these days I need to encourage him to let go, but there are still other things going on. But yes, I wanted to do more with them in terms of performance, but they are definitely on the stage, they are acting in it. So I love it. I loved including them in this festive world we created them.

Now that you’ve spent almost a whole year reflecting on it, we can talk about how beautiful and insane it is that “All I Want For Christmas Is You” hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time last year. . , 25 years after its publication?

It was such a high point for me as a career wise man, because of how much I love Christmas, and that in part. Because I’ve always loved it so much. But I had to go through my difficult hurdles, to say the least, to start at a young age and very young in this business and not really be a unified family or the kind of holidays that I always think you will see on this. TV …

So, being number 1 in 2019 with “All I Want for Christmas Is You” was a moment where I just looked at the Christmas tree lights there at 3 in the morning and took it to a really human level, because you spend your whole life for something. Work. And … it’s so exciting because it’s on Christmas, which is my favorite, but it’s also like, what’s the point of keeping it valid. I never knew people would match the song I wrote – my first Christmas song I’ve ever written. How did I know it would become a thing every year? I would not have known it. And I grew up loving it more, because I always listened to it and picked it up against all the other Christmas songs at Christmas, like, “Why haven’t I changed this part? I wish I could do that.” Because I did it too early, so young. But still, it makes me happy every year.
