How Kyle Shanahan of the 49ers finally went from Super Bowl LIV loss

Kyle Shanahan has already been distraught in two separate Super Bowl losses: once as an offensive coordinator with the Atlanta Falcons, and once as head coach of the 49ers.

Now more than five months removed from the 49ers Super Bowl LIV loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, Shanahan has moved on, but admits it will always hurt.

“I don’t think you will get over it completely,” Shanahan told Chris Simms of NBC Sports in the last episode of “Chris Simms Unbuttoned.” “But your depression is going away. I would say that was overcoming it. I checked February and March … I mean, it wasn’t in the best state.”

Shanahan, 40, saw double-digit leads disappear in the fourth quarter of each of her Super Bowl appearances. Now he knows how to put the latest loss in perspective.

No matter how much it hurts, which was a lot, Shanahan eventually had to move forward and focus on the next task at hand.

“No one died,” said Shanahan. “I still have my health. I still have my family, but the man hurts when you know how close you were to something and you know how important it is and how easy you feel you could have done it.” … It’s a difficult thing to deal with in February and March, but you get over it because you love your life.

“You’re still going to go out and work. It’s just a sport, but it’s my livelihood. That’s where you get over depression and everything. Now you’re getting ready to compete again. That’s what I enjoy doing.”

The 49ers are expected to become NFC favorites again this season, and Shanahan is more focused than ever on bringing a Super Bowl championship to the Bay Area. She knows that there are more important things in life, but it is clear that she cannot wait for football to start again.

“First you are a husband. First you are a father. You are not just a soccer coach,” Shanahan said. “You can’t let that define you, and you put it in perspective. That’s what allows you to continue.”

“But holy, I want to go back there and do it.”
