Healthy Illinois teen dies days after coronavirus contract, family says

An 18-year-old girl died in Illinois just days after the Covid-19 deal was struck, her family said.

Sarah Cementall, who lived in Chicago suburb Tinley Park, died of the virus the second day of Christmas, Cook County officials said.

The girl’s mother, Deborah Cementel, told ABC-affiliated WLS that the virus “literally ate her up.

“No parent should let their child go through that,” he said.

Cementle said her daughter experienced the first symptoms last Wednesday and tested positive for COVID-19. She was hospitalized and moved to the University of Chicago for treatment, the Chicago Tribune reports.

The county’s medical examiner’s office said the infection killed the teen on Sunday due to severe hypoxic respiratory failure and nontraumatic cerebral hemorrhage.

“She was a healthy young woman who turned 18 in November and was in the hands of the world,” her mother told The Tribune.

He said his daughter “is an example that it can happen to the youngest and healthiest people … this is real.”
