WatchOS 7, introduced last week and available to developers, is a significant update introducing useful new Apple Watch features like sleep tracking and watch face sharing.
We went hands-on with wentwatchOS 7 in our last YouTube video to give MacRumors Readers a preview of what’s to come when the update is released later this year.
Apple still doesn’t allow custom watch faces, but it did add more flexibility in watchOS 7. Multiple complications from a single app can be used on your watch face, so if you want to do something like set up a navigation themed watch face with information about waves, water temperature and more, all taken from one app, can do it.
There are various complications created by Apple to add to the Apple Watch in watchOS 7 to access shortcuts, Camera Remote app, moon phases, sleep tracking and world clock.
There’s also a new feature that lets you share your watch face, so you can create useful faces and share them with friends and family through apps like Mail and Messages, or with a wider audience on the web. Apple also plans to highlight the useful faces of watches on the App Store.
Apple added a new Chronograph Pro watch face with a tachymeter, and adjusted a few others. The Photos side supports color filters and the X-Large side works with complications.
Sleep Tracking allows the wornApple Watch to be used at night to track how long you sleep, with sleep habits visible over time in the Health app on iPhone. The Apple Watch sleep tracker does not provide detailed data on metrics such as deep sleep or light sleep, but it comes along with sleep mode, sleep and alarm functions to maximize the amount of sleep you are sleeping on.
Sleep mode turns off the Apple Watch screen and activates Do Not Disturb While Asleep, and can be set to turn on automatically based on the sleep schedule on the watch. Wind Down works on your own preferences before bedtime and can do things like suggest you open a meditation app or turn off the lights while preparing to sleep. In the morning, the Apple Watch can wake you up with a haptic alarm, greeting you in the morning with a weather report.
To make sure you have enough battery, the Apple Watch provides notifications when you need to charge above 30 percent before bedtime, and if you are charging in the morning as you get ready for the day, you will see an alert on your phone that alerts you when the “Apple Watch” has a full charge.
Battery drain for sleep tracking isn’t that bad, and in our experience it drained about 30 percent overnight, something Apple could improve during the beta testing period.
Along with sleep tracking, Apple introduced a new handwash monitoring feature that helps people wash their hands for the recommended 20 seconds. When Apple Watch detects handwashing movements and the sound of running water, a 20-second countdown begins.
Apple renamed the app “Activity” to “Fitness” in OSwatchOS 7 and added new workouts including Dance, Functional Strength Training, Core Training, and Cool Downs, and provides more post-workout data.
IOS 14 features have been added, such as cycling instructions for cyclists and EV routes for electric vehicle owners, Siri can offer spoken translations, Siri requests are now faster with dictation on the device, and there are new hearing health features for Better protect your hearing when listening to music.
AtchWatchOS 7 is limited to developers right now, but Apple plans to release a watchOS 7 beta for public beta testers for the first time. WatchOS software cannot be downgraded, so when public beta software is released beta testers will still need to exercise caution before installation.
After a few months of beta testing to fix bugs and optimize new features, watchOS 7 will see a public release this fall alongside iOS 14.
