Almost every day, between March 17, 2016 and March 12, 2020, when Broadway turned off its lights amid the global pandemic, I started every morning entering the lottery # Ham4Ham, hoping to win a pair of $ 10 tickets to see the Broadway musical that transforms the zeitgeist spirit of Lin-Manuel Miranda Hamilton accomplished on Broadway. I even had an app for that (two, actually).
I kept doing this, even after the original cast left. Even after jealously watching several friends win (one of them in the only day he was in New York City) Even after I finally relented and bought tickets to see the production in Chicago. Even after my wife said she wouldn’t go with me if I won (see above, re: global pandemic). I figure I entered the Hamilton lottery about 1,000 times. I never won
And now it doesn’t matter (or matters less, anyway), because on July 3, the beginning of the July 4 weekend, and every day thereafter, I (and you) can see a pristine recording of the show, elaborately filmed in 2016 and featuring the entire original cast, on Disney + solo when.
The mouse spent about $ 75 million to acquire the rights to the filmed version of the musical earlier this year, with the intention of releasing it in theaters in 2021. The pandemic changed those plans, and all of us (or at least those of us who subscribe to the transmission service) are the beneficiaries.
If Broadway reopens, when it reopens, I will still continue to enter the lottery; I’m not going to throw away my … Well, you know.
