‘Halo Infinite’ case design confirms that the Master Chief is getting a hook

Microsoft has unveiled the first official glimpse of the Halo Infinite box in beautiful high-resolution form before its starring role tomorrow on the Xbox Games Showcase, and gamers are looking for clues inside.

Well, you can analyze the background or the reflection in his helmet as much as you want (I think it’s just a Brute?), But the most obvious is the front and center.

That’s largely what a grappling hook looks like on the Master Chief’s forearm, confirming an earlier leak this week that the game would have them. If you don’t believe me, you can see what his forearm looked like in Halo 5 and you can clearly see that it is a new addition.

Mobility is rumored to change like sprinting and grappling hook (no pun intended) with the idea that Halo may have to evolve a bit to keep up with rivals like the ultra-mobility-focused Apex Legends. A grappling hook is not exactly a new Invention in space, but it would be fairly new to Halo, particularly giving the Master Chief himself one to use during the campaign.

Anyone can guess how it can be used, either just for mobility or it can also hook enemies like Scorpion from Mortal Kombat. I’d say the game with the best use of grappling hook game in combat is Respawn’s Titanfall series, and that translated a bit into Apex with the Pathfinder kit. But no, I don’t expect the Master Chief to be running off the walls anytime soon.

It looks like we’ll just have to wait another day to deal with the hook responses, as the first video for the Halo Infinite campaign will debut tomorrow, and maybe we can also see the hook in action in multiplayer mode. 343 has always had to strike a balance between innovation and staying true to the roots of the series, but in 2020, the shooters’ landscape has changed dramatically, and it’s hard not to imagine that they feel the need to go a bit further for the campaign and multiplayer. We’re still not 100% sure Infinite is structured as a “traditional” Halo, with some rumors that parts of it may be open world. But it will have a story, and it will have multiplayer, obviously.

I am in favor of 343 trying to increase mobility in Halo in interesting ways. There are games that can get away with it on the ground like Call of Duty or Valorant, but the Master Chief swinging around a map with a grappling hook is something I can leave behind. We’ll find out more tomorrow.
