Back at E3 2018, Microsoft announced an ambitious beta testing program for Halo Infinite that would see developer 343 Industries invite people to test the game before launch and send feedback to the studio. Now the developer is cutting back on some of those plans.
In a blog post, 343 chief Chris Lee said the studio remains “committed to building the game in partnership with our community,” but that the company is making some changes.
“Given this year’s unprecedented challenges, we are not exactly where we expected to be in terms of broader public flights,” said Lee. “While it is not the full program we had envisioned, we have been working closely with the community on almost every facet of the project.”
Some of the challenges Lee is referring to here include switching to a work-from-home setup for 343 and its development partners. Additionally, Lee said 343 has been affected by social justice movements taking place across the United States and the world, and that members of her team took the time to unite and take a stand against racism.
Although 343 is cutting back on its beta testing plans for Halo Infinite, Lee mentioned that 343 worked with “confidential groups of community representatives” from the start of game development to collect feedback on the game’s art style and history, while that the studio also brought in community members to try out the game.
While 343 can no longer commit to offering public beta testing for Halo Infinite, Lee said 343 is “evaluating options for broader practical opportunities before launch.”
Lee also mentioned that there may be beta testing after launch as 343 plans to grow and evolve Halo Infinite over time. “In fact, in many ways, community feedback and evaluation will be even more important after launch as we partner to continually evolve and update the game in the future,” said Lee.
343 sees Halo Infinite as a platform rather than a game, and one that the studio plans to admit until 2030 or later. Halo Infinite is slated for release this weekend as a launch title for Xbox Series X. The game is also coming to Xbox One and PC.
