Following their announcement last weekend at DC FanDome, IGN has been lucky enough to interview Warner Bros. Montreal about all things Gotham Knights. The developer shared some pretty interesting details about combat, storytelling, special abilities, and the open world that can change your perspective on things – that’s if the trailer and gameplay footage didn’t already do it for you, of course.
As for the story, senior producer Fleur Marty suggests that this is a completely stand-alone story that does not force you to play online with other people. “If you play one player, you can be offline if you want. We think that collaborating and living that dynamic duo fantasy can also be a great experience for players, but we will not force it.” Co-op will only be for a maximum of two players and you can play the entire game as one superhero – that’s our Batgirl playthrough then sorted.
Rather interestingly, you and a friend can both play as the same superhero in collaborative games. “Now, if you happen to have two Batgirls, you can do that too. Of course, the potential to have different Batgirl builds, and how they look and play differently, is also really cool.”
And as far as combat is concerned, this is somewhat more akin to a traditional third-person action game instead of the Batman: Arkham franchise’s freeform action. “The way you access some of your special moves and things like that can vary, I’m sure, but in terms of both attacking and defensive choices, having a range of combo choices, having variations in strike types and attack types, be able to combo in your reach attacks, as well as your melee attacks – all that’s there, and I think it’s going to be fun for people who have modern, contemporary action-adventure style brawlers played by third parties. “
