Gotham Knights is not a continuation of the Arkham series

Although the name and setting of Gotham Knights may suggest otherwise, the game is not actually set in the Arkhamverse.

It was very easy to accept Gotham Knights is a continuation of the Arkham universe, especially Batman: Arkham Knight. The unveiled trailer begins with a posthumous message from Batman, which, although played by an actor other than the mainline Arkham Games, suggests that the story follows Arkham Knight.

However, developer WB Games Montreal has since made it clear that Gotham Knights does not follow existing games, and is set in its own DC universe.

“Gotham Knights is an original story set in the Batman universe of DC and not related to the Arkham series,” the studio confirmed to Comicbook in a statement.

While this is a bit disappointing, it makes sense that WB Montreal would not wake up with the expectations that come with creating something new in an existing and beloved universe of characters.

In case you missed it, Gotham Knights was revealed over the weekend as a two-player co-op action game with Batgirl, Robin, Nightwing and Red Hood taking over the mantle of protecting the city after the death of Batman. Although co-op seems to be the focus, the game can also be played solo.

Gotham Knights releases sometime in 2021 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series.
