The Boston Celtics were able to get something for Gordon Hayward after all. After all the buzz about Danny Ang was lost from anything that was offered by the Indiana pacers, he became the main one to get valuable assets from the Charlotte Hornets.
The .5 28.5 million Traded Player Exception (TPE) Boston received in exchange for a second-round pick is the largest TPE in NBA history. It can be very valuable to the Celtics, too, but even more valuable than what the pacers offer.

What is TPE?
A traded player exception is basically a coupon that a team receives in exchange for a traded player that can accommodate them in cap space or in the exception.
In the NBA, businesses have to get paid to work. When a team like Charlotte can absolutely sign a player but decides to trade for it without sending the players back, the sending team is the TPE instead. It’s a way to match pay, but, basically, do it later.
So Boston gets a kind coupon in the amount of Gordon Hayward’s first year salary, and they can use it to get paid in the trade or in the next trade.
Why would Charlotte do that?
Because they’ve got two second-round picks for it, and it could be valuable as cheap players to fill the roster or as sweeteners for the business down the road.
How can Boston use it?
The beautiful print on this coupon reads “Cannot be combined with any other property.” They can split it and trade for more than one player or with more than one team. They could trade with one team tomorrow and another team in March. Some key rules:
- It cannot be combined with anything else to increase its value. They will not be able to earn 33 5 33.5 million by adding 5 5 million or 5 5 million to the TPE trade created by the Anes Counter deal. This TPE is the only one.
- It cannot be used before its expiration date. Normally it’s a year but due to the weird time of this season, it will end just before the next season starts.
- It cannot be used to sign a free agent. It’s not money to spend. Instead you can think of it as a type of gift card and can only be used in a “trade store”. However, if there is an agent fee agent they want to sign, they can probably easily negotiate a sign-trade with his or her original team and that team will have its own TPE. Will create.
Who can get Boston with it?

Personally, I think Boston should be the target wings. Vusevic is on this list because it’s an interesting Stretch-5 option with a declining contract, but it’s still more expensive and I’ll be wary of that move.
Porter is 27 years old and has a career 3 to 40.4% shooter. He earns higher wages in Chicago but the trade brings him his bird rights, so Boston could either sign him a more reasonable deal next season, or trade him on a deadline. Hild and Barnes are candidates to move to Sacramento, but Hild is just starting a five-year big expansion and that could be too much for Boston.
Barnes is a terrific shooter that can fit into Boston’s multi-positional style. It is also on a declining contract, making .3 20.3 million next season and .3 18.3 the following season. These are very commercial numbers.
Harris, who has one more season on the deal with the Denver Nuggets, is an interesting “change of scenery” guy. Injuries have cost him chances and the team has done well without him. Their seamlessness makes them tougher, so the business of making TPE for salary-clarifying and filling their place during the summer when the hard work is gone is meant. Boston hopes to have a little better health and the new team can make him a 40% shooter than he was two years ago.

If I’m Danny Aing, I basically call the Chicago Bulls and land Rlando Magic and ask who’s available on their roster in this situation. Gordon will be able to do very well with the Celtics if he only plays within himself and a system that is not expected of him.
Personally, I will get f ourn narir if possible. It is coming to an end this season and could provide immediate assistance. He’s 28 and a killer shooter from the cold, so Orlando will dump him next season instead of paying him. The real questions with our Norfolk trade are whether return Relando will demand more in return, and Boston will pay to move it forward.
There is no doubt in my mind that New Reliance would choose to get the asset back for Radick. Boston can certainly use a reliable shooter like him off the bench.
If Boston were hoping to test its floor-spacing capability once more, Miami wouldn’t mind emptying a cap ping clip in the Olinic trade.
Aminu is a very unlikely person but if he is healthy, he can be a strong, versatile defensive wing. If he is able to regain any of the magic in his Portland shooting, it would be a good bench option.
Hill Kemba will be a very capable backup for the taxman and will be able to run the show step by step if it becomes a knee problem. His million 10 million salary is not guaranteed next season, but $ 10 million could make him a valuable trade chip next summer.
Tucker will make the frontcourt a little more crowded, but there’s no harm in calling the financially troubled Houston Rockets and seeing if you can be stolen.
It is important to note that individuals at this level are also very commercial, and may be valuable in future pay-matching scenarios for the Celtics. Right now, Marcus Smart is the only mid-size contract on the team, which means he has to be included in most trade scenarios for the superstar. Getting players around the size of his contract could help Boston keep him on the road to big business.
Although the Celtics play this, they will have some options. Some of these names are more discreet than others, and some may not end up being available, but these are the types of players playing from Boston with TPE.
