In May, Google quietly marked the fifth anniversary of Photos with direct album sharing. Google Photos today is receiving a major redesign that modernizes the look of the mobile app and, most notably, its icon.
Update 6/29: The Google Photos redesign is being widely implemented for Android users today after immediately appearing on iOS last week. Try closing the application from the Recent multitasking menu and restarting until you receive a welcome message.
Original 6/25: Instead of four main sections and a navigation drawer, Google has simplified photos to just three tabs on the bottom bar.
The app still starts with a “Photos“But thumbnails and autoplay videos are getting bigger as the gap between everything is reduced. Google has updated the Memories carousel to take advantage of larger portrait cards instead of circles, while adding more content types .
In fact, Google has created movies, collages, animations, stylized photos, and other automatic creations as part of Memories, with the “For You” tab disappearing. Introduced last fall, Google says the story-like feature is seen by 120 million users each month.
Google observes how “Search for“It has become more important as” the photo libraries have gotten bigger. “As such it is a dedicated section and the center tab. It starts with a text box and is followed by a carousel of” People and Pets. “bigger than before.
However, the most important feature is the new map view, which Google says is its most requested feature, under “Places”. Leveraging EXIF camera data and Google Location History, Photos has a heatmap effect and locates images as you go back in time.
You can pinch and zoom around the world to browse photos from your travels, see where you’ve taken the most photos in your hometown, or find that photo somewhere on your road trip across the country.
Finally, it is the “library“Tab with Albums, Favorites, Trash, File and more. This is followed by the” Photos on device “carousel, while US and Canadian users will see a banner for the print shop.
Meanwhile, the “Share“The feed has been moved to the upper left corner and is visible throughout the application.
The redesign of Google Photos will be released to Android and iOS next week as version 5.0. Meanwhile, the photos on the web will see an updated design and the new icon.
