Google Area 120 launches Shoploop, the alternative shopping application to Instagram, TikTok 07/17/2020

Google’s experimental Area 120 division on Thursday unveiled a video shopping platform for mobile devices that highlights creators ‘and brands’ products in clips of 90 seconds or less.

The short clips appear to be similar to those found on Instagram or TikTok.

They are all product videos. Most focus on makeup and skincare, but Shoploop plans to expand to different types of products, such as electronics, clothing, and jewelry.

The videos demonstrate viewers how to use the products, and Google technology allows them to buy online from the app.

The tabs separate the product categories. Viewers can like, share and save videos. Individual video creators have a profile page where viewers can follow them to stay up-to-date with the product information they share.

“Last year, I was on the New York City subway doing user research for Touring Bird, a project I was working on with Area 120, Google’s in-house laboratory for experimental projects,” wrote Lax Poojary, general manager of Shoploop. “One of the young travelers standing next to me was scrolling silently on his device, alternating between a social media app, YouTube, and an online store.”

When Poojary asked the woman what he was doing, it turned out that he had I have seen someone promoting a makeup product on social media and wanted to check it out. So she watched YouTube reviews to see what it would look like in real life and if other people liked it. Then she looked it up on an e-commerce site to buy it. This involved three different applications or websites.

Poojary wanted to build one that would do all three functions. Google is now promoting the app as “a platform with short-form and interactive videos that helps people discover new products and buy.”

There is a waiting list to join as a creator of Shoploop. Those interested must complete an interrogator and be at least 18 years old.

Current taxpayers include some big brands and retailers like Allure and Sabbatical beauty.

Maybe housewife orders and store closings helped Google’s Area 120 introduce the app.

The idea of the application is to help people experience the appearance of the products they are buying without having to go to a physical store. Shoploop helps brands get product reviews from real people who know and use them.

For example, Alex demonstrates the use of live products in his video to get rid of pimples, and Kim includes practical advice and tips on how to use a facial roller in his video.
