GM confirms 12 new electric vehicles in Chevy, Buick, GMC and Cadillac

Many electric vehicles come our way.

General Engines

Buried in the latest General Motors sustainability report released Thursday (PDF), the automaker spread a lot of news about its upcoming portfolio of electric vehicles. We know that the automaker’s goal is to bring 20 electric vehicles to the market globally by 2023, but for the first time we have US-specific information.

A total of 12 new electric cars are confirmed and will be available soon in all GM divisions: Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac. We already knew some of them, but some were publicly mentioned for the first time.

Let’s start with the main divisions and move towards luxury-oriented brands.

Hunting

Chevy has already confirmed that the Bolt EUV and Velite 7, shown here, share a platform.

Buick

The Bowtie brand has three new electric cars, according to GM. The first is the Bolt Electric Utility Vehicle that GM mentioned in the past. Hope it looks a lot like Buick Velite 7 which recently revealed for China. We will see Bolt EUV debut next summer as a 2022 model and it will be the first vehicle outside of Cadillac to receive the automaker. Super cruise partially automated driving assistant for the motorway.

GM did not provide deadlines for the next two electric vehicles, but we should see them by 2023 to keep up with the automaker’s aggressive timeline. The biggest news is a battery-powered electric Chevy truck that will have at least 400 miles of range. Details are sparse, but GM said it will fill the full-size segment, so expect it to be roughly the same size as a Silverado. Finally, a midsize SUV will come from Chevy for “customers looking for an electric option in this segment.” That’s all GM said about this vehicle, but it could draw inspiration from the latest. Pioneer.

It is not new, but GM also confirmed a new Bolt EV is on the way and will launch next year as well.

Buick

Hopefully the Enspire is tied to production.

Buick

Two new SUVs with electric motors are on the way for Buick. One is a more traditional vehicle with a crossover shape to “maximize interior space and cargo,” while the other model will be “expressive.” Buick has built some wonderful concepts over the years, so we hope to see something really impressive.

GMC

We will see an SUV based on this type.

GMC

The obvious vehicle that GM talked about for GMC is the next Hummer EV truckBut after numerous rumors, GM also confirmed that we will see a pickup-based electric Hummer SUV. It should share a lot with the truck, so when we finally get to see the truck, we’ll likely get a good look at the next SUV as well.

Cadillac

The Lyriq should look like this.

Cadillac

GM’s luxury division is set to lead the automaker’s EV onslaught, and it has a total of five EVs coming soon. We know two of them: the Lyriq electric SUV ready to debut next month and the Celestiq’s flagship model. The latter is the only sedan mentioned in the group. In addition to these two models, Cadillac will get three additional electric SUVs.

The first will be an entry-level luxury model, similar to the space that XT4 packed today for Cadillac. Next up is a “global-size” three-row SUV with an emphasis on interior space, and finally, we’ll look at a full-size electric SUV taking Escalade cues. We’ve heard a lot of rumors about an electric Escalade to come, but it’s unclear whether it will be an extension of the current SUV or an entirely new model.

Ranges from 500 to 600 miles? Feasible, says GM

This is just a version of GM’s new 3rd generation EV platform that will support the new Hummers: Ultium batteries and everything.

General Engines

Expect all of these new models (except the Bolt EV and EUV) to be mounted on GM’s new BEV3 platform, which is compatible with automakers. Ultium battery technology. The technology is intended to help Tesla hunt better, with ranges exceeding 400 miles on a single charge and ultra-fast charging at speeds of up to 350 kilowatts.

But the automaker emphasizes that it is already looking further ahead. Engineers are already working on technology to replace Ultium with low-cobalt alternatives, to be more Earth and budget friendly. Instead, they could harbor high nickel qualities, and with other advancements, we could see that GM’s electric vehicles come in ranges from 500 to 600 miles.

GM said long ago that it believes in an electric future, but clearly the automaker is putting its money where its mouth is.
