Giants cut popular Hunter Pence: outfield, leader, World Series champion

The Giants nominated Hunter Pence for assignment Sunday, and cut ties with the outside planner who was a major figure and inspiration for two World Series championship teams.

Reliever Sam Coonrod, who was again included from the 10-day injured list, took Pence’s roster spot.

Pence hit .096 (5-for-52) with two homers and six RBIs in 17 games. He was signed in February as a free agent for $ 3 million after spending a year with the Rangers, mostly as a designated hitter. The Giants hoped to hit like he did in 2019 (.297, 18 homers), but the 37-year-old never discovered his Groove again.
