‘Ghost Of Tsushima’ is the seventeenth best PS4 exclusive, which speaks volumes

It’s the official launch day for Infamous dev Sucker Punch’s Ghost of Tsushima, and PlayStation fans can’t wait to get their hands on it.

According to all reports, the rumor surrounding Ghost of Tsushima seems pretty positive, and the worst thing anyone has to say about it is that its open world may feel a little generic for today’s gaming landscape, but it’s well-rated, 83 in Metacritic.

Although I thought Ghost of Tsushima would probably be the last “big” exclusive release before the arrival of PS5 this fall, I would try to see it in a broader context. And that context shows only a phenomenal series of games for PS4 over the last generation.

The respectable 83 of Ghost of Tshusima on Metacritic actually makes it what I think is the 17th best reviewed PS4 exclusive to this generation. That may sound bad until you look at the master list and see the caliber of the games.

I cut some that had less than ten reviews, some of them finally made it to the PC, and I may have missed one or two after going through about 200 games, but here is the list I came up with, which has Tsushima on the 17 Mancha.

  • 1. Persona 5 Royal (95)
  • 2. The last of us remastered (95)
  • 3. God of War (94)
  • 4. The Last of Us, Part 2 (94)
  • 5. Person 5 (93)
  • 6. Uncharted 4 (93)
  • 7. Travel (92)
  • 8. Bloodborne (92)
  • 9. Dreams (89)
  • 10. Horizon Zero Dawn (89)
  • 11. Nioh (88)
  • 12. Spider-Man (87)
  • 13. Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection (86)
  • 14. Nioh 2 (85)
  • 15. Ratchet and Clank (85)
  • 16. Uncharted Lost Legacy (84)
  • 17. Ghost of Tsushima (83)

If there’s a reason Sony and PlayStation fans are confident in the future of PS5, even with a rather anemic exclusive lineup at launch, it’s that list. A generation of monster titles, many of which will likely see more quality sequels in the next generation.

Microsoft also has many great exclusives! But by putting the charts side by side (I can do that in a later post), the only two exclusives from this generation that scored 90 or higher were two games from Forza and Ori. The high-profile entries in the high-profile series are at the bottom end of a list like this (Gears 5 and Halo 5, both at 84). But Microsoft is gearing up for a ton of new first-party games for the X Series, so we’ll see what happens there.

But yeah, it’s a whole generation if Ghost of Tsushima is considered an exclusive with a “lower” score. To play for me now.
