The defeat to Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League has put Zinedine Zidane in a difficult position, under great pressure to change the results and his next task will be the small matter of the Classical, but the French manager is not without fault of the situation, as he has made five serious mistakes.
1. Poor planning regarding team building
At this point, responsibility is shared with Florentino Pérez, but it is no secret that Los Merengues lost multiple assets during the summer transfer window and only joined their group by bringing Martín Odegaard and Álvaro Odriozola from their assignments.
Ironically, both players are injured so they have been unable to contribute practically anything so far this season.
2. Isco and James, a comparison that hurts Zidane
While the Colombian midfielder has become one of the biggest stars of the 2020/21 Premier League season, Isco, who in theory should do the same at Real Madrid, has been widely criticized for his poor performances.
What is now being questioned is how Zidane handled the case of James, a player to whom he did not give confidence. He bet on Isco and so far it has seemed like a bad decision.
3. Zidane’s blind trust in Marcelo
Marcelo has been one of the great Real Madrid players of the modern era, but his time at the club should have come to an end before now. He has been in decline for at least two seasons and has been at the heart of the team’s last two losses.
He is making defensive mistakes that have cost the team and he no longer contributes in attack, but Zidane continues to give him key minutes.
4. The sales of Achraf Hakimi and Sergio Reguilon
Once again, it is an error of shared responsibility between the coach and the technical department that Pérez directs.
The whites needed to bring money to the club during the summer, and a lot, so the decision was made to sell Achraf for 40 million euros and Reguilon for just under 30 million euros.
These two players had been with the club since they were nine years old, but fans see them thrive away from Madrid, despite playing the two most problematic positions within Zidane’s squad at the moment.
5. Jovic, Odegaard and Vinicius Jr create too many doubts
Zidane has his favorite selection of players who will always be starters if they are available: Courtois, Ramos, Varane, Carvajal, Casemiro, Kroos, Modric and Benzema. However, there is a group of people below who do not feel the same confidence from the coach.
Zidane has too many doubts about players with whom he has not won, and that is reflected in his performances when they get a rare exit on the field.
Luka Jovic has gone from being told that he can go, to being a starter in a Champions League match. Vinicius Jr falls and returns to the team regularly, while Rodrygo and Odegaard have not done enough to convince the manager either.
This lack of confidence manifests itself in matches and therefore we see many disjointed performances by Real Madrid, especially in matches where the French coach is trying to rotate. He doesn’t like to rotate and the players who come in can feel that cold.
