Zinedine Zidane has a problem. The basic principle on which your philosophy rests is failing you. The success of the French coach at the helm of Real Madrid has always been based on the collective effort of his players, in which his entire team plays a role in achieving his goals. That kept his squad happy, made everyone feel useful and also gave them an advantage over their rivals, who in most cases don’t boast as much strength in depth.
This year, however, there are a few members of their squad who have proven not to live up to the demands of the competition. Many of them are out of shape and, lacking in confidence, don’t step up when given the opportunity early on.
Zidane is only getting a positive response from 12 or 13 players on his squad right now. It was they who saved the team at Camp Nou and did the same against Borussia Monchengladbach. In Germany, despite nearly losing and snatching a point from death, Los Blancos did show some positives, although they were disappointed by defensive errors.
Real Madrid has no margin for error in the Champions League and in LaLiga Santander it cannot afford to squander the award it won at the Camp Nou. Not allowing those who play more minutes to get enough rest would be a big mistake in the face of what will be another Real Madrid final on November 3 against Inter. On the other hand, rotating the team too much again is a risk that the Frenchman will distrust.
The return of Eden Hazard from injury, who came on as a substitute against Borussia Monchengladbach, along with Dani Carvajal and Martin Odegaard, should help ease some of the pressure on Madrid’s leading men, but the Whites can forget about having a good year if seven or eight players are not giving their best. Zidane knows very well that titles are rarely won with a good team; they are won with a good squad.
