The Los Blancos coach has overtaken a Welsh forward for the Santiago Bernabéu departures, with another challenge in the Premier League

Zinedine Zidane needs to “look in the mirror and ask himself: was I wrong?” when it comes to Gareth Bale, says Graham Roberts, with a Tottenham legend hoping to see a familiar face in North London.

José Mourinho has struck a one-season loan deal that will see the 31-year-old Welsh international retrace his steps towards the Premier League.

In 2013, Bale became the most expensive player in world football when he left Spurs for the Santiago Bernabéu.

He has accumulated 13 trophies while in Spain, while recording 105 goals, and is considered the best British export of all time.

However, the highs were often offset by the lows in Madrid, with a bright start in life with the whites giving way to frequently asked questions about Bale’s form, fitness and attitude.

Zidane began to freeze him in the midst of those fights, and the Frenchman turned to offensive inspiration elsewhere.

He claims he has never had a problem with Bale, but Tottenham legend Roberts believes that a man who knows all about life under the brightest spotlights could have handled a long-running saga better.

“Gareth still has a lot of time ahead of him,” Roberts said. Bernabeu Digital before Bale’s homecoming.

“The Real Madrid fans are very demanding, but Bale has scored big and very important goals in two Champions League finals.

“Zidane needs to look in the mirror and ask himself: ‘Was I wrong?'”

While questioning the management of Bale by Madrid, Roberts hopes that a proven player at the highest level will prosper in English football.

A man who spent six years of his playing career in North London added: “He’s brilliant. Gareth is the right signing for Tottenham. It will definitely give the team a big boost. “

Spurs have completed a second foray against Real Madrid by left-back Sergio Reguilón, with Mourinho fending off the interest of rivals Manchester United and Sevilla to land the 23-year-old defender.

“He’s a fantastic signing,” Roberts said.

“He had a fantastic season at Sevilla and I’m sure he will do even better with Spurs.”

Tottenham are off to a slow start to their 2020-21 campaign, in the Premier League and Europa League, but will expect to see a spark in the back of the positive transfer news when he makes a trip to Southampton on Sunday.
