Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane has emphatically denied that Raphael Varane is for sale despite his ties to Manchester United.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team has long coveted the French central medium and they were reportedly preparing an offer ahead of the January transfer window.
But Zidane has insisted that the 27-year-old will not leave, saying that both he and the club’s bosses remain desperate for Varane to remain in the Spanish capital.
He said: ‘He is part of this club, we were very lucky to be able to bring him to Madrid.
“He has a great career, he has achieved a lot since he has been here. Of course, it is non-transferable for the club, for the coach that I am, for the people in general.
That is clear and unequivocal. Now we can’t stop people from talking. It’s not just about Varane, but about all the players, Real Madrid and others.
“But for Varane, my position is clear and is the same as the club’s.”
Solskjaer signed Harry Maguire from Leicester for £ 80m, but according to the Manchester Evening News, the club still wants Varane to strengthen his bottom line.
The 71-game French international has won four Champions League titles and three LaLiga titles in more than 300 appearances for the Spanish giants.
Then-Real Madrid manager José Mourinho, now at Tottenham, brought Varane to the club in the summer of 2011 after just one season in the senior category for Lens in Ligue 1.
Sir Alex Ferguson was also interested in him, but ended up hiring Phil Jones from Blackburn, describing Jones as having the potential to be the best player on the Red Devils.
The 28-year-old Jones has only played twice in the league in the past two seasons for Manchester United and has not played for England for two years, and United would be willing to sell in January.
Zidane spoke before the crucial Los Blancos clash in Villarreal’s surprise package.
Real Madrid, fourth, can overtake second-placed Villarreal, led by former Arsenal manager Unai Emery, with a victory at El Madrigal on Saturday afternoon.
