Eden Hazard and Casemiro tested positive for COVID-19 and this was the main topic of conversation during Zinedine Zidane’s press conference on Saturday, before the Valencia game on Sunday night.
The coach explained that the players are doing well mentally, although this is a difficult situation.
“They are good, even if they are not happy with what happened,” he told the media.
“Emotionally and physically, they are good. I texted them and will talk to them again later.”
Pressured by Hazard’s current state of mind given that he had just returned from injury, Zidane insisted the Belgian is doing well.
“He is strong and he knows this is a difficult moment, but he is mentally good,” said the coach.
Although the rest of the squad – except Eder Militao, who was already positive – has tested negative, it was necessary to apply greater social distancing in Saturday’s training sessions and Zidane was asked how this affects his preparation for the match Sunday night away in Valencia.
“This can happen and it could have been worse, so we have to accept it and continue to work as a team,” he said.
“This is a strong group. However, it is a bit disconcerting to have to train like this the day before a match.”
Moving on to other issues, Zidane was asked about how the team has responded in recent weeks after suffering poor results in a row.
“When the going gets tough, these players get over it,” he said. “It has always been like this”.
“There are difficult moments in a season and the players are human, but they are committed and their reaction has been good. I trust all my players.”
One of those players is Martin Odegaard, who has returned from injury and the manager was asked about his condition.
“He will be on the squad for the trip to Valencia and he is doing much better,” said the Frenchman.
“He will be leaving with his national team soon. It doesn’t matter what I think about it. What matters is that he returns to 100 percent later. I have no doubts about him.”
