At 16 years and 28 days, Borussia Dortmund’s Youssoufa Moukoko has become the youngest scorer in Bundesliga history with his goal against Union Berlin.
Starting in the German capital and making only his third appearance since becoming the greenest debutant in the Bundesliga, Moukoko had already had a couple of goal visions, even hitting a post late in the first half.
He finally found a way to get over Andreas Luthe, and how! – in the hour Raphael Guerreiro hit the ball into the left side of the penalty area, and Moukoko slammed a fierce shot between the Union goalkeeper and the near post to make Bundesliga history.
Moukoko unseats Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz, who was 17 years and 34 days old when he beat Manuel Neuer of Bayern Munich on Matchday 30 of the 2019/20 Bundesliga campaign.
The previous record holder was Nuri Sahin, whom Moukoko also dwarfs in the Dortmund record books. The former BVB midfielder opened his Bundesliga account in November 2005 at the tender age of 17 years and 84 days.
Moukoko, who was born in Cameroon but moved to Germany at the age of 10, has been making waves since switching to St. Pauli or Dortmund in the summer of 2016.
Representing BVB U-17s at age 13, and BVB U-19s between the ages of 14 and 16, he recorded 141 goals and 27 assists in just 88 games at the youth level, before taking advantage of a change in the DFL rules on the minimum age requirement for Bundesliga players, and debuting the day after their 16th birthday.
