You kept Amidu in the dark

Professor Stephen Kwaku Asare, popularly known as Kwaku Azar, has reacted to Martin Amidu’s resignation as special counsel by saying that there is no justification for issuing an appointment order for someone just for the appointment letter that will arrive two years later.

He was responding to Amidu’s claim that although he was appointed in 2018, his appointment letter arrived in February 2020.

The respected attorney further stated that it is not the president’s business to invite independent persons to his office after he has conducted an investigation into the issues.

Attorney Azar added that “The only thing worse than that is not paying the person for two years while remaining in the dark about the nature of their benefit and emolument.”

My opinion is that the SP should have stood firm and continued with the investigation of Agyapa. This is exactly what Judge Abban did when General Acheampong tried to interfere with the UNIGOV tabulation of the results.

I also believe that presidents should avoid inviting independent officials to the presidency to discuss their work, especially if that work involves the executive. Such invitations compromise independence in appearance and promote the myth that the president is a king.

We should stop creating offices just to check a box. Offices require logistics (construction, supplies), budget, and staff. These things must be in place as a precondition to setting up offices. By the way, we should also stop creating overlapping bureaucracies, all underfunded.

There is no justification for issuing someone an appointment order just for the appointment letter to arrive two years later. The only thing worse than that is not paying the person for two years and keeping him in the dark about the nature of his benefit and pay.

Finally, the boards of directors of these independent bodies are useless. In fact, some of them just cause problems.
