You are just criminals – Bawumia tells the Togolan … | Politics

The agitators of West Togo are mere criminals who persecute a nonexistent nation, said Ghana’s Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Different secessionist groups claiming to be western Togolanns have launched attacks in different parts of the Volta region in recent times.

In the first attack, on Friday, September 25, 2020, they seized two police stations, took officers hostage, and stole weapons from armories after blocking entry and exit points in the Volta region.

They subsequently set fire to two buses in the Ho STC courtyard on Tuesday, September 29, 2020.

Speaking on the subject, Dr. Bawumia said: “I think all Ghanaians should be concerned about this criminal behavior in Ho, in the Volta region, which is happening, not just me.”

He told Asempa FM on Wednesday 30 September 2020 that: “We are a very peaceful nation”, adding: “Indeed, the most peaceful nation in West Africa” according to the “Global Peace Index and we have been independent since 1957 and, in general, Ghana has not been a place where you can find these kinds of problems.

“But recently, you’ve heard people say that Ghana is not really Ghana and I don’t understand it,” said a puzzled Dr. Bawumia. “I want to understand where they come from. That is why I think it is simply criminal because history does not support what they want, “he said.

In recounting the story behind Ghanaian nationality, Dr. Bawumia recalled that “there was a plebiscite in 1956 prior to Ghana’s independence to allow the people of then western Togo to decide whether they wanted to join Ghana or not.”

“People included people in Ho, I think the area of Kpando, Buem, Krachi, Gonja, Mamprusi, Dagomba.

“And there was a majority in joining Ghana and in the legislature, there was a discussion about what kind of Ghana we are going to have. A unitary Ghana or a federalist Ghana?

“I think that at that time, Nkrumah favored a united Ghana; the NLM, at the time, favored a federalist Ghana.

“But the debate took place in parliament and the vote took place and we opted for a unitary Ghana. So, at that time, the boundaries of Ghana were determined. In fact, most of southern Volta was not part of the plebiscite.

“The Anlos and all that, they weren’t part, they were all on the Costa Dorada.

“So today, if you say Western Togoland, it must be a figment of your imagination. It doesn’t exist, ”Dr. Bawumia said.

According to him, “The Mamprusis are part of Ghana, they have not expressed interest in going anywhere; the Gonjas are part of Ghana, they have expressed no interest in going anywhere; the Oti people are part of Ghana, they have not expressed any interest in going anywhere. So where is this product from western Togo? ” I ask.

“Is it Ho, or some people in Ho or some people in Kpando or Kpeve? Where is? So we just want to take Ho out of Ghana or Kpeve out of Ghana and make it a country? It is the product of your imagination because there is no legal basis for these lawsuits.

“So it’s criminal. So Ghana must unite. We are one country. This is not a matter for political parties. We are one country. We are different peoples in a country and the land of Ghana is determined.

“There is no problem in losing an inch of the land of Ghana, it is already determined. So there is a clear situation where we have some criminals who are trying to twist history and engage in criminal activity.

“And so what you are seeing, the attacks you are seeing are nothing more than criminal activity and from that point of view, we should all be concerned and we should do everything and we will do everything we can from a security perspective. ”Noted Dr. Bawumia.

He added that: “From where I am sitting, I know that the security agencies are doing a lot. It is not all we can say on the air, but I am very confident and comfortable with the work and the reports that the security agencies are giving. In fact, they thwarted things that could have been worse; they are working and we have to support them more ”.
