Former President John Dramani Mahama has urged Ghana’s traditional chiefs and leaders to be fair and balanced in their reproach of politicians and to call upon President Nana Akufo-Addo whenever he is wrong rather than generalize his warning.
In the opinion of the standard-bearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), leaders in Ghana only find their voice of reproach when their party is in power, but lose it once the ruling New Patriotic Party is in command of affairs.
Addressing the chiefs and people of Jinijini in the Berekum West constituency of the Bono region on Monday, September 28, 2020, Mahama said that since President Akufo-Addo took office, his government has been rife with violence. electoral, intimidation, scaremongering, discrimination and closure. elimination of radio stations that criticized him, murder of journalists, suffocation of press freedom, and implicating his friends and family in corrupt deals like the Agyapa Royalty Agreement and the now-failed PDS power contract.
Mr Mahama wondered why Ghana’s traditional chiefs and leaders have indifferently watched the president perpetrate such violations against the people of Ghana.
“So Nananom, we are both your children.
And every parent knows which of their children is the troublemaker and the ‘patapaa’.
“But often, you generalize your reproach and we all follow your advice, but now is the time for you to call the troublemaker by name,” Mahama said directly to the traditional leaders.
Mr. Mahama continued, “Nana, you are the custodians of our land.
“Before Western democracy, you were the custodians and rulers.
“And then you have a chance to speak up when things go wrong.
“However, it often seems that when one of your children is on the throne, you cannot punish him for anything because you are afraid to.
“But every time his other son ascends the throne, he will hear people ask, ‘Where are the wise men of our land?’
“Everyone criticizes him. But it must be balanced in punishing both children every time they make a mistake, ”Mahama said.
