Granit Xhaka faces a fight to save his career at Arsenal, as the club issued a stern warning of growing indiscipline on Monday.
Gunners coach Arteta, who has been unequivocally endorsed by club bosses, called Xhaka’s conduct ‘unacceptable’ after the midfielder was sent off for grabbing Burnley midfielder Ashley Westwood by the neck during the demoralizing defeat by 1-0 on Sunday night.
Sportsmail understands that despite having played regularly for Arsenal since Arteta’s arrival last year, the club is open to offers for the Swiss international.
His lack of discipline at the Emirates on Sunday night and subsequent public criticism of Arteta will only serve to reinforce internal beliefs that Xhaka is expendable.
In fact, in a rare interview on Monday, manager Edu issued a stern warning to players regarding discipline.
In addition to Xhaka’s red mist, record signing Nicolas Pepe was sent off during a recent clash with Leeds for lashing out at Ezgjan Alioski.
And Edu said: ‘This (discipline) is something important to mention because that means you have to be here and be prepared to face that situation because sometimes you get excited, then you react, the way you don’t need to react and sometimes you commit a mistake as they have.
‘Mikel is in charge, he’s talking to the players, telling them that we need all the players, so we need 11 players to play against 11 because it is very difficult to play 11 without 11 against any club in England.
“The players have to understand but Mikel is in charge of that, they talk a lot with the players and they must understand the importance of not behaving like that.” Edu also gave his backing to Arteta after a lousy start to the season that sees them sit in 15th place.
If we don’t talk about patience with Mikel, it would be very unfair to him. Because what year we have faced.
‘Mikel is doing a great job, he’s really doing well here. The players believe, the staff enjoy it, everyone believes and everyone tries to be positive here on a daily basis. So nothing has really changed.
I think the club needs stability right now, we have faced so many changes.
“It’s not about Edu, Mikel, it’s about stability. Now is the time to try to be a stable club in the old sense: externally and internally, we need it.
“Since we got here we have been changing, changing, changing, now is the time to be stable and together at the same time.” Meanwhile, Edu has opened the door for Arsene Wenger to make his first comeback to the Emirates since he left in 2018.
“It’s very simple, you need strong people and good character, I have nothing bad to say about Arsène, so if she is here it would be fine,” added Edu.
We usually need someone like him to talk. Sometimes I call people, Mikel calls good people for advice and it’s always good to have big boys around you. ‘
