Numerous voices throughout the Barcelona-Real Madrid rivalry agree on one thing: Iker Casillas shouldn’t have had to leave Los Blancos as he did.
The legendary goalkeeper said an emotional farewell to his childhood club in July 2015 before joining Porto.
“I will never forget you, and I will be sure that wherever I go I will continue shouting ‘Hala Madrid’. I’m not going to say goodbye because I’m sure more will come,” Casillas said.
“See you soon and best wishes. It’s over.”
In their recent Movistar documentary, ‘Hanging the Wings’, Casillas and other soccer figures reflect on that cold goodbye.
“The departure of a player who has been at a club for 25 years, especially at Real Madrid, cannot be like that. I think both sides were wrong,” Casillas said.
Myself because of my desire to leave immediately, the club perhaps because of not being prepared. Personally, every time I see it, I feel bad.
The former rival of goalkeeper Xavi also felt that things should have been done a little differently.
“It sucked for him, to be honest,” Xavi said.
“Not exactly going out the back door, but it was all a bit soulless.”
Xavi’s midfield teammate Andrés Iniesta agreed that it was not done correctly.
“For me it was not a proper farewell for Iker Casillas,” Iniesta said.
Gerard Piqué, for his part, held the matter as an example of how cruel football can be.
“He ended up leaving the club in a way that will also go down in history and that shows that in football people have little memory and everything is very fleeting,” said Piqué.
Even José Mourinho, who did not have the best relationship with Casillas, felt that the manner of his departure was unfair.
“It was an ugly and undeserved departure,” Mourinho said.
Former Real Madrid player Jorge Valdano also intervened.
“He should have started in the way that suited Iker Casillas, not like any other exile,” Valdano said.
