Arsenal legend Ian Wright believes Manchester United would be a challenge for the Premier League title if Mikel Arteta were in command instead of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Solskjaer has yet to win a trophy since taking office in December 2018, while Arsenal manager Arteta collected his first piece of silver in August after beating Chelsea in the FA Cup final. He then went on to win the Community Shield later that month.
The Gunners earned their first victory at Old Trafford in more than 14 years on Sunday, condemning United to their worst start at home since the 1972-1973 league season.
While Arsenal appear to be making progress with Arteta, United’s form has gone up and down since Solskjaer took over – their loss to Arsenal came after a 5-0 win over RB Leipzig in the League. of Champions.
Former Gunners forward Wright believes Solskjaer has underperformed with the players at his disposal and suggested the club would be a challenge at the top of the table if Arteta were in charge.
“Can I say something? I’m going to blow it up: If Arteta is managing Man United, they are a challenge,” Wright said on his Wrighty’s House Podcast.
‘We are talking about [Paul] Pogba here, World Cup winner, you got [Axel] Tuanzebe, who can’t even enter the field after scoring possibly two of the most exciting and brilliant players in the world.
‘He’s using two restraint midfielders when if he’s playing Tuanzebe he doesn’t need it! And you have a manager who, to me, is playing with vibrations, he is managing with pure vibrations.
‘Look what Arteta has done in his time at Arsenal. We are seeing training changes, we are seeing training on the field, we are seeing impact. Look at [Mohamed] Elneny, she came out of nowhere, found him and said, “He can do this for me, he can do that for me.” He’s making the pieces work.
And looking at Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who has a Man United team with this [Alex] Telles: I think Telles seems like someone who could do something.
‘Harry Maguire is starting to get back to what he can do, we know what Harry Maguire can do, with Tuanzebe by his side and [Aaron] Wan-Bissaka, and the goalkeeper is starting to find his way, they should do better than that.
“What they did against Arsenal the other day, for me, for Man United, after the two results, it was shameful. Roy Keane said the players will take him out. It’s not just the players. ‘
United are looking to achieve three wins out of three in their Champions League group when they face Istanbul Basaksehir in Turkey tonight.
Arsenal are also looking to maintain their 100% record in their Europa League group when they host Norwegian Molde on Thursday.
