Work together to avoid deadlock in hung parliament

The Executive Director of the African Center for Parliamentary Affairs (ACEPA), Dr. Rasheed Draman, has urged the two main political parties to work together and avoid deadlock.

According to him, the 8th Parliament with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) winning equal seats can lead to difficulties in making a “final” decision.

His comment comes in the wake of the NDC’s victory in the Sene West constituency in the Bono East region on Thursday, which gave the party 137 seats in Parliament.

“I foresee a serious stalemate if the two parties are unable to resolve the current electoral differences and challenges,” he said.

Currently, both the ruling PNP and the opposition NDC have secured 137 parliamentary seats each with the only independent member, Andrews Amoako Asiamah, declaring his allegiance to the ruling side of the island.

While highlighting the viability of a power-sharing agreement, Dr. Draman opined that these potential blockages can be removed if both parties can compromise and work together in Parliament for the country’s development.

“They will have to see the interest of all of us and find ways to engage, dialogue and work together,” he said.
