The Obetsebi-Lamptey interchange, the construction of which began in October last year after President Akufo-Addo mowed the lawn, is about 92 complete.

Barring any issues, the exchange will open to traffic next month.

Funding for the project, amounting to $ 135 million, was secured by the Akufo-Addo government through the UK and Spain Export Credit Service.

This came to light when President Akufo-Addo inspected the progress of the work as part of his regional tour of Greater Accra on Tuesday.

The Obetsebi-Lamptey interchange is located at the intersection of the Ring Road, Graphic Road, and Accra-Winneba Road.

The stretch has long witnessed traffic congestion and a major source of concern for commuters.

In addition, the location has experienced perennial flooding due to the inadequate capacity of storm drains to contain running water.

It is for this and other reasons that the Government of Ghana decided to improve highway capacity by separating at the intersection level and providing additional stormwater channels.

According to on-site engineers, the project involved a flyover over the intersection in an east-west direction, and the improvement of the drainage system in the immediate vicinity.

It also includes the relocation of all utilities along the corridor, including; electricity cables, pipes from the Ghana Water Company and telecommunications infrastructure.

The engineer told the president that the second phase of the project would include the construction of a north-south overpass, and the improvement of some critical improvements to the arterial roads.

President Akufo-Addo also inspected the Jamestown fishing port.

The $ 48 million project is funded by a grant from the People’s Republic of China.

The project is to convert the old Jamestown fishing port enclave into a fishing port complex with additional facilities.

The works being carried out on the project include the renovation of an old breakwater and the construction of a new section with a total length of about 500 meters; dredging of the harbor basin to depths of up to 5mm meters for boats and offshore outboard motorized canoes.

There would be a boat repair shop and shed, including a machine shop area and crib rigs.

There would also be a new nursery with capacity for about 60 students, for children of fishermen, a cold room and mid-level fish processing facilities, including all public service systems: water, electricity, parking, driveways and administrative offices .

Physical works for the Project began with the construction of a temporary area, near the Korle Outfall, west from the Jamestown harbor site, to relocate all fishermen to the temporary area.

Temporary works included earthworks, construction of a breakwater to protect canoes and prevent ingress of floating debris from the Odaw / Korle systems.

So far, the contractor has completed major site preparation work, established temporary offices on site, mobilized necessary personnel and equipment, demolished a substantial part of the fishing port area with concrete and foundation work underway.

The contractor indicated that the progress of work on the project as of September 30, 2020 was 15 percent.
