Torgbui Addo VIII, Klikor’s overlord has said he cannot find the right words to describe former President Jerry John Rawlings whose death, he said, is a great loss to humanity.
He described the first president of the country’s fourth Republic as caring, selfless and humble.
Torgbui Addo spoke to the Ghana News Agency on the sidelines of a meeting between the leaders of the Volta Region National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the Traditional Council of Anlo at the residence of Torgbui Agbesi Awusu II, the Awadada of Anlo in Woe .
The visit of the NDC delegation, which included regional executives from the party headed by its chairman, Mr. Henry Ametefee and the Parliament’s Volta Caucus headed by its chairman, Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzrah, was to formally brief the heads of Anlo coming of South Ketu, North Ketu, South Akatsi, North Akatsi, Keta and Anloga Districts of the disappearance of Mr. Rawlings and sympathize with them for his loss.
The Supreme Chief of Klikor spoke about Mr. Rawlings’ kind, peaceful and humble nature.
“In fact, I don’t know the right words to describe the icon. It is so generous and what’s more, it doesn’t even make a noise. This car that I’m using now, it got it for me. I was home one day and someone took it to me as a gift from Mr. Rawlings.
“He called to see how my family and I were doing. Shortly before the sad news of his death, he called my daughter to ask about me when I was installed. Every time, he cares about someone and never cares about himself.
“He was very respectful and humble. Check out what he did last at a funeral in the Tongu area. He knelt before me just to ask permission to leave the ceremony early. He is our former president and also the head of our land. It’s hard for me to imagine that we lost it. We have a lot to learn from him, ”he added.
Mr. James Gunu, NDC Volta Regional Secretary, said that the party would collaborate with the Traditional Council of Anlo to give Mr. Rawlings a proper burial and noted that various activities were organized in memory of its founder.
He said the legacy Mr. Rawlings upheld was the principles on which the NDC was founded; the principles of probity and responsibility and, therefore, must be respected.
In addition, he urged Ghanaians to ensure the return of the NDC to power, as “that would be the best way in which the country could honor the memory of the late former president.”
The Anlo Traditional Council noted that following this formal communication from the family regarding the passing of their son, Mr. Jerry John Rawlings, a delegation would be sent to the family in Accra on Friday 20 November to participate in the deliberations leading up to arrangements to send the deceased Rawlings back to their ancestors.
