Kpando’s municipal director for the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Richard Asilevi, has called for the active participation of women in the country’s electoral processes as the nation prepares for the general elections in December.
She said that women and children were the most vulnerable during electoral violence and that it was time for political actors to incorporate the participation of women in promoting violence-free elections.
Mr. Asilevi spoke at a training day for Christian women organized by the Christian Mothers’ Association, a non-governmental organization with the support of Konrad Adenauer Stiftung, a German NGO.
The theme of the training was “Women collaborating in the electoral process: a credible 2020 election without violence”.
She pleaded with the women to embark on a campaign to help make the December elections the most peaceful in the country for the safety of their businesses, their children and their health.
“When electoral violence occurs, you see women with their children on the move and they wonder where we are going, they don’t know …”. she lamented.
Asilevi said women must make sure their voices are heard during election years.
“Women must ensure that their husbands, brothers and fathers are educated about the need for a peaceful election so that at the end of the day peace prevails,” she added.
Ms. Olivia Ansu Amponsah, Executive Secretary of the Christian Mothers Association, said the Association organized the training to equip women who “gave birth to young men who are used to perpetrating violence during elections” who had a important role to play in reaching out to youth to give peace in politics a chance.
He said women had to use their maternal instincts to help protect the sanctity of the nation for the sake of the vulnerable in society.
Ms. Philomena Afeti, president of the Christian Mothers Association, Immaculate Conception Parish, Kpando, pleaded with the women to spread the message of peace before, during and after this year’s elections to all local churches.
