A 26-year-old woman identified as Rutendo Nhemachena reportedly died while being baptized in the Manyame River in Zimbabwe.
Nhemachena is believed to have been possessed by a mermaid spirit before turning violent and jumping into the river where the main prophet, Isaac Manyemba, was cleansing men and women with his assistant only identified as Mai Manyika or Madzimai Jennifer.
HMetro reported that the people who were with her believed that she had been grabbed by a mermaid and did not attempt to rescue her. Manyemba confirmed the tragic event by saying that Nhemachena overpowered him and appeared to be possessed by a mermaid spirit.
The Prophet said;
“They both convinced me and I took them to the river where we treated several men and women when suddenly Nhemachena entered the river possessed.
“It pushed us all and we couldn’t handle it before I dived and disappeared into the water.
“We were comforted by a woman who claimed that a mermaid took her son once when he was seven years old and returned from the water at 14 years old.”
However, Nhemachena family spokeswoman Patience Gwebede denied suggestions that the deceased was abducted by a mermaid. She said the deceased was to be buried in Chihota after an autopsy.
He said;
“We hope that the law will take its course and that he will get an explanation from the traditional healer or Madzibaba and Madzimai who were conducting the cleansing ceremony.”
The national police spokesman, Deputy Commissioner Paul Nyathi, confirmed the accident and said police are still investigating the circumstances that led to the drowning.
